Cape Town – Posters on the streets of Buffalo City promoting businessman Tokyo Sexwale for president are “unfortunate”, the African National Congress said on Wednesday.
“The ANC distances itself from this practice,” the ruling party said in a statement.
Dispatch Online reported on Monday that big colour posters reading “Tokyo for President” were seen on poles in and around the city.
The ANC said it welcomed a statement by Sexwale’s spokesperson that he knew nothing about the posters.
“The ANC is concerned that some people – whether inside or outside the organisation – may use such tactics to influence internal constitutional processes, or to cast aspersions on the integrity and discipline of individual ANC leaders,” it said.
The posters appeared after a visit by Sexwale to Grahamstown, where he told more than 500 students at the 16th annual anniversary of the SA Students’ Congress that he was prepared to be the next “voice of the people”.
The ANC nomination process for the next party president officially began on Monday this week, allowing branches to openly discuss their favourite candidates.
