A 25-year-old man was arrested for stealing cattle after a shootout with police in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday, police said.
Spokesperson Superintendent Jay Naicker said police had been patrolling the N2 freeway when they noticed a green Isuzu LDV approaching them.
“The vehicle slowed down as they noticed the police vehicle and the driver seemed undecided on what to do next.”
Two police officials, Constables Sizwe Sibiya and Zamane Mbatha, followed the vehicle.
“At the Amatikulu bridge the policemen attempted to pull the vehicle over and one of the occupants then opened fire.”
Naicker said police returned fire and the Isuzu eventually came to a standstill at the Nyoni off-ramp.
“Four suspects fled from the vehicle as it came to a stop.
“One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound and was arrested by the police.”
Naicker said three cows were found in the back of the vehicle.
“Police are at this stage trying to establish if there were any reported theft of stock in northern KwaZulu-Natal last night (Monday).”
“We are also investigating a case of attempted murder,” said Naicker. – Sapa
