I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

The closely-knit Bonnievale community is in shock over the death of a prominent wine farmer in a freak accident on the Breede River at the weekend.

Adolph Jonker, 49, one of the directors of Mooiuitsig wine estate, cut open his neck on a “foefie-slide” cable tied across the river while jet-skiing with his 14-year-old son.

The accident probably would not have happened if the water level had not been raised so significantly by heavy rains, said Bertus Conradie a Bonnievale police captain.

An inquest docket has been opened by the local police, he said.

‘This has definitely shaken the community’

Jonker and his son took off from their farm outside Bonnievale downstream to Swellendam, and after they passed through the town Jonker slammed into the slide strung across the river, injuring his neck and throat.

The uninjured boy clung to his bleeding father as they were swept a kilometre downstream and washed up on the river bank, in front of a farm house.

The owner of the farm heard the boy calling for help and rushed to their aid, but Jonker had already died.

The boy had no physical injuries, but he was severely traumatised, said Conradie.

Jonker’s wife, Olive, was too traumatised to speak to the media on Tuesday. A relative said she wanted the family’s privacy to be respected. Jonker was a father of three.

The Jonker cousins own a number of wine farms in the Breede River Valley, including the well-known wine estate of Weltevreden.

“This has definitely shaken the community. Jonker’s death is a great loss to the community,” said Conradie.

The local tourism bureau declined to comment on Jonker’s contribution to wine tourism in the area, besides saying that the winery was well-known.
