A Standard Bank automated teller machine was blown up in East London on Tuesday, Eastern Cape police said.
Superintendent Mtati Tana said police officers patrolling in Phumlani township early on Tuesday morning heard the explosion and rushed to the scene.
They found cash scattered around the ATM. It seemed the perpetrators did not have enough time to take the money and panicked.
“Police found a lot of money and explosives,” Tana said.
The ATM was attached to a private house, rented by the bank.
“The back wall of the house was completely destroyed in the explosion,” said Tana.
This was the first ever ATM blast in East London.
No arrests have yet been made. – Sapa
