Jan] KWAZULU-NATAL “ With only days to go before a Press conference is supposed to launch his political party, the man who calls himself Neil Watson appears to have vanished. Watson made a name for himself by launching a website called Crime Expo South Africa (Cesa) that sought to highlight SAs crime scourge by wrecking the image of SA as a tourist destination, and a safe venue for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. In a number of media interviews Watson claimed to have set up the website after personally losing two friends to murder. He also claimed to have four children and to be running his website from New York City, to where his family had relocated. His website solicited donations and sold advertising “ in addition to asking people to send SMS messages of support at R3 each. But a Citizen investigation found the website was run from an address in Strand Street, Cape Town, which was the headquarters of the controversial Gay and Lesbian Alliance. Supporters of Cesa and Watson were asked to donate funds into an account of a Juan Uys “ a shadowy gay activist. Uys staged a protest against the SA Blood Transfusion Services policy of not accepting blood from gay men by encouraging gay men to not disclose their sexual history when donating blood. Voice spectrograph tests, the results of which are on a number of websites, have revealed that Uys and Watson are probably the same person. Since these tests have been placed on the Internet a number of websites have noted Watson appears to have vanished. Yesterday Cesa spokesman Maryna Perley-Robertson told The Citizen plans were on track for Cesa to have a Press conference on Monday to announce their political party. She could not say what arrangements had been made for the Press conference. Perley-Robertson insisted she had been in touch with Watson, and he had not vanished as reported on the Internet. Although she had never met the man she insisted she had been in telephonic contact with him. She also claimed the Cesa website would be functional again in days. The website was suspended by its service provider as it contained racist and offensive language. Perley-Robertson said an e-mail detailing plans for the proposed political party, and explaining why the website was still not functioning, had been sent out to supporters and the media. But she refused to give The Citizen a copy of the e-mail. Last month Simon Grindrod, leader of the Independent Democrats in Cape Town, asked police to probe the website to establish whether the group had been paying tax on income, or were committing fraud by claiming to be victims of serious crimes. The SAPS yesterday said the matter was under investigation. Grindrod confirmed he had been asked to meet a senior officer from the Commercial Crimes Unit in Bellville. Source: The Citizen |
