Maputo – Armed thieves stole around five million meticais (about 140,000 US dollars) on Monday night from a branch of the ProCredit bank in the Maputo neighbourhood of Chamanculo.
The thieves had clearly made meticulous preparations, since they kidnapped both the bank manager and his deputy from their homes, and drove them to the bank, where they forced them to open the strong box, which contained about five million meticais.
On their arrival at the bank, according to Pedro Cossa, spokesperson for the Police General Command, the bandits also overpowered the sole private security officer who was on duty that night.
According to Wednesday’s issue on the Maputo daily “Noticias” the thieves took less than five hours to carry out the two kidnappings and the bank robbery. With the bags of money in hand they fled from the bank leaving the two managers and the security guard unharmed.
Cossa said the police are interrogating workers at the bank, but have not detained the manager or deputy manager, who are presumably not under suspicion.
Cossa also told reporters that shortly after midday on Friday a vehicle of the private security company MOSEG, which was escorting a second armoured vehicle carrying large sums of money, came under fire from gunmen in an unmarked Toyota.
Four of the security guards were seriously injured, but the assailants were unable to steal anything.
