Nigeria: One Feared Dead As Gunmen Attack Bayelsa Speaker’s Home

Yenagoa – Barely 48hrs after the Bayelsa State governor, Chief Timipre Sylva was attacked by gunmen, the peace of Okunbiri community country in the Sagbama local government area of Bayelsa State was Monday violated by armed hoodlums who attacked the country home of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly; Mr. Nestor Binabo leaving one person dead and another seriously injured.

So far, eight persons have lost their lives in the last couple of days in the wake of the renewed orgy of violence rocking the state prompting the authorities of the Joint Task Force to deploy soldiers in strategic locations on the streets of Yenagoa weekend to complement the efforts of the police in conducting stop and search.

The attack on the sleepy Okunbiri, a predominantly fishing and farming settlement which is coming on the heels of the invasion of the home town of the state governor, Chief Timipre Sylva has further heightened fears among public office holders in the state.

Investigation revealed that the attack at dawn is the fourth in the series of attacks on top government officials in the state prompting many of them to relocate their families to safe zone like Abuja and other cities far away from the state.

Informed sources told Vanguard that the attack was launched on the riverine settlement at about 12.30am by some unknown armed gunmen operating in two speedboats armed with dynamites and other dangerous weapons.

The gunmen were said to have thrown dynamites at the residence of the Speaker, whom the community folks described as the target of the invaders without achieving the desire impact due to stiff resistance put up by the community youths.

Vanguard learnt that the attackers on arriving at the community waterfront headed straight to the residence of the Speaker but were resisted by the community youths who according to sources had on noticing the suspicious movement of the speedboats in the river mobilised and moved to apprehend the suspects.

But the equally battle ready gunmen were said to have opened fire at the group of youths that had gathered at the waterfront to checkmate them (invaders) killing one Esanpou Naina, aged 22, a father of a two months old daughter.

Another youth identified as Perekebi Douglas was injured and rushed to the hospital at Amassoma for treatment.

Police spokesman, Mr. Eguavon Omokpai (ASP) confirmed the incident saying the command was on top of the situation.

He said policemen had been dispatched to comb the area with a view to apprehending the perpetrators of the heinous act.

But the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Nestor Binabo described the attack on his home and that of other political holders as a manifestation of the threats received for effecting change in the polity of the state.

Binabo, who was Deputy Speaker during the impeachment of the former Deputy Governor, however said the threats received by the members of the House of Assembly during the impeachment exercise were reported to the state Commissioner of Police and other relevant agencies in the state.

“We received lots of text messages on plans to terminate, damage and injure many of us. We took some precautions and reported the case to the State Police Commissioner. But I believe this attack and many others is a manifestation of the threats we receive on the impeachment,” he said.

It would be recalled that the Aleibiri country home of the impeached deputy governor, Peremobowei Ebebi in Ekeremor local government area, the home town of Governor Timipre Sylva at Okpoama, the home of the state Chairman of the Sanitation Authority, Chief Reginald Dede in Akassa and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Conflict Resolution, Mike Wenibowei were also attacked in the last few days.
