I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Yenagoa – Unknown gunmen, Saturday, launched yet another attack on Okpoama, Governor Timipre Sylva’s hometown, in the Brass Local Government Area of the Bayelsa State.

The governor’s maternal uncle, a retired Major, aged 83, was allegedly manhandled by the invaders who left in their trail destruction of property in the usually peaceful coastal community.

The recent upsurge in violent crimes in the state might have informed weekend’s deployment of soldiers on the streets of Yenagoa to help check the escalating gang related killings where no fewer than seven lives have been lost in the last one week.

Vanguard learnt that though no life was lost, the attack on Okpoama, was launched at about 4.30 a.m by unknown gunmen in two speed boats. The invaders, numbering about 18, allegedly beat up indigenes of the community and vandalized homes of their victims.

The state Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, accompanied by the state Commissioner for Information, Strategy and Orientation, Nathan Egba, also a native of the area, had visited the community to assess the extent of damage wrecked by the invaders.

Briefing newsmen, yesterday, after the tour, Egba said the series of attacks and violent actions might have been a coordinated effort by some persons to disrupt the existing peace in the state and embarrass the governor.

Egba said though the security agencies had redoubled efforts at bringing those involved to book, the governor had assured the people of their safety and sustenance of the prevailing peace in the state.

He said: “It is obvious that it may be part of a coordinated attack to make the Bayelsa environment unsafe. The state has enjoyed peace because the governor has invested much in the sustenance of peace and development. The governor’s record at achieving and maintaining peace in the state may have threatened some individuals.”

The commissioner urged the people to be vigilant and report any shady characters in their domain to the police and other relevant security agencies, adding: “The people should assist the state government and it is also a call to duty for the security agencies in the state.”

It would be recalled that the Aleibiri country home of the impeached deputy governor, Peremobowei Ebebi in Ekeremor Local Government Area, the home of the state Chairman of the Sanitation Authority, Chief Reginald Dede in Akassa and that of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Conflict Resolution, Mike Wenibowei, were also attacked in the last few days.
