Angola: Armed Forces At Methodological Meeting On Chemical Weapons, Defence

Kuito – Thirty members of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), including high ranking, captains and lower ranks officers from the central military region, are participating since Saturday at a Methodological Meeting on Chemical Weapons and Defence, taking place in the Command of the 4th Military Infantry Division in Kuito, central Bié province.

The meeting, whose works are set to end on July 16, will focus on standardisation and developing of specialty work.

Speaking at the opening session, the deputy commander of the Fourth Division of Military Infantry in Bié, Brig. Adelino da Conceição Botelho de Carvalho, said the meeting is happening at a time the Armed Forces, in particular the Land Forces, are making an effort to reverse the current system of chemical defence.

The FAA general further stated that the use of chemicals is as old as the war itself. For this reason, he spoke of the need to updating the specialists in the subject with a view to matching the current reality on the ground.

He stressed that mass extermination defence is one of the most complex provisions in combat units aimed at preventing the troops from being infected with chemicals and reducing the use of weapons of mass destruction in maintaining the capacity of the sub-units and ensure the success of the missions assigned to them.

Adelino da Conceição Botelho de Carvalho insisted on the need to increase the knowledge about the exploitation of radiation and contamination levels as well as the employment of proper means of protection, implementation of engineering works, in preventive health and hygiene measures.

The event will discuss, among other topics, the “History of the emergence of weapons of mass destruction and”, “Generality on the study of means of protection, “Introduction to means of biological exploration”, specific tasks of the company and platoon commanders in preparing the lessons.
