A Presidential Committee on Power to tackle the country’s energy crisi was constituted on Thursday, chaired by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.
This was disclosed in Abuja by the Minister of State for Power, Nuhu Wya, when he resumed his post to which he was re-appointed on Tuesday on the new Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF).
Wya is the Deputy Chairman of the Committee.
Other members include Finance Minister, Olusegun Aganga, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Lamido Sanusi, the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) Director, the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) Director General, and experts from the private sector.
Wya said the inclusion of officials of the CBN, BPE and BPP as well as the Finance Ministry is to enable the relevant establishments to address budget matters, facilitate transactions, ensure due process, and sustain reforms in the power sector.
He expressed optimism that the contributions and expertise of stakeholders from the private sector would be of immense benefit to the Committee.
Jonathan taking charge of the Power Ministry does not mean that he has declared a state of emergency in the sector, Wya explained, adding that the circumstances simply demand that all hands must be on deck to achieve the best objective.
“(Jonathan) is putting everything in place to address the challenges, the development of the nation cannot be achieved without power,” Wya stressed.
He described his re-appointment as “a return journey to a normal cause that we have been charting together.”
He said the ministry’s mandate to improve power supply would be vigorously pursued through the provision of gas to thermal stations and the strengthening of distribution and transmission lines.
He also pledged the commitment of the ministry to create an enabling environment for investment by making the power sector more attractive to operators.
Wya assured that Abuja would develop other energy sources, such as coal, solar, and wind farm to reduce dependence on oil and gas.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Ibrahim Sali, also pledged the commitment of the staff to the policies geared toward the development of the sector.
After the inauguration of the EXCOF on Tuesday, Jonathan’s Media and Publicity Assistant, Ima Niboro, explained that the decision not to appoint a substantive Minister for the Power Ministry is deliberate.
He disclosed that Jonathan “is to take charge of the Power Ministry for now” and “a new power team is being put in place to work in conjunction with the Barth Nnaji-led Power Sub-Committee of the Presidential Advisory Council.
“This new body is to take charge of a new power initiative to be unveiled in a matter of days. (Jonathan) shall chair this body, with the Minister of State for Power as Deputy.”
The Committee comprises experts in the different areas of power, ranging from generation to transmission, distribution and finance.
