Nigeria: Microsoft Partners With Anti-Crime Body to Combat Crime

Abuja – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] and Microsoft yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding [MoU] to jointly combat internet crime in Nigeria.This was disclosed in a joint press briefing of the EFCC and representatives of Microsoft held at the headquarter of the anti-corruption agency.

While the EFCC was represented by its chairman Mrs Farida Waziri Mr Emmanuel Onyeje, Country Manager Microsoft Nigeria and West Africa, stood in for the multinational corporation.

According to Mrs Waziri, under the new agreement, it the EFCC will host the first ever West African Internet Fraud Summit in Abuja in November 2009. Microsoft through the Advance Fee Coalition will finance the summit.

“This MOU seeks to build on the initial MOU 2005 signed by Microsoft and the EFCC that expired October 2008 and under the old arrangement Microsoft actively partnered and provided information and data which led to many arrests and convictions of internet fraudsters in Nigeria. “

Also there will be an extended scope of the partnership to cover the fight against software piracy across Nigeria and to involve the Advance Fee Coalition [Microsoft,Yahoo,African Development Bank,.Moneygram and Western Union] with EFCC.

Mr Onyeje Microsoft Country Manager in his response, said in Nigeria, internet scams,identity theft,financial scams and spam are unfortunately still all too prevalent and all these along with rampant software piracy, undermines Nigeria’s economic development and ability to attract foreign investment.
