Two men have been arrested after a domestic worker was raped and beaten at her place of work in Ashburton, near Pietermaritzburg, and then taken for a ride of terror.

Police confirmed that the 46-year-old victim was sitting in her room in the outbuilding at her employer’s place of residence on Friday afternoon when she heard a knock on the door.

“When the woman opened the door she was confronted by a man she knew. He allegedly forced her onto the bed, took off her clothes and raped her,” said spokesperson Inspector Joey Jeevan. It is believed the man was employed as a gardener at the home.

After allegedly raping her, the man demanded the domestic worker hand over the keys to the main house. When she refused, he assaulted and threatened her.

“She then handed him the keys,” said Jeevan.

He forced the woman into the main house and demanded that she hand over the keys to the garage.

She told him that she did not have keys to the garage, at which her attacker allegedly drew a firearm and hit her on her head. He left her in the lounge while he searched the house.

Jeevan said he returned moments later with the garage and vehicle keys as well as several bottles of alcohol.

“He further assaulted the woman by kicking and punching her on her body and forced her into a black Range Rover which belonged to her employer,” Jeevan said.

He drove towards the Hopewell area, where he picked up another man. En route, the suspect stopped at a service station in Umlaas Road to change a flat tyre.

“At this point the victim managed to escape and hide. She managed to get help from a passer-by who contacted the police,” said Jeevan.

The police immediately responded and surprised the two men, who both ran into the nearby bushes. Officers gave chase and arrested one man, while the other escaped.

Police arrested the second man in Hopewell, near Pietermaritzburg, after a tip-off.

The victim was taken to hospital where she was treated for bruising and a head wound.
