One man is dead, another wounded and one still at large after they kidnapped a cash in transit guard and shot it out with police on Monday.
Police spokesperson Andre Traut said a security guard employed by a cash in transit company was approached by three armed men as he left a store in Rondebosch’s main road at 11am on Monday.
The security guard, who was carrying a cash box containing an undisclosed sum of money, was forced into a white Opel Astra by the men, who then drove on to the N2, Traut said.
The van’s driver alerted the police, Traut said, and a description of the Opel was broadcast to all officers.
Police patrolling on the N2 close to the Mew Way off-ramp spotted the car and chased it, he said.
Police and the robbers exchanged fire and the Opel was “forced to a standstill” in Driftsands, Mfuleni, Traut said.
“One suspect was fatally wounded, one sustained a (gunshot) wound to the head and was arrested, and one suspect fled the scene.”
Traut said the second man’s head wound had been “superficial”. The guard was not injured.
He said the cash box and a firearm were recovered. – Staff Writer
