Now here’s something of no major surprise as it seems that former President Jimmy Carter is receiving praise from Syrian Baathist dictator Bashar Assad for his “role” in the “peace process” along with hoping that the new administration of Barack Obama would be as unfriendly toward Israel as possible:
President al-Assad Hails Jimmy Carter’s Efforts for Revitalizing Peace Process in the Region
Dec 13, 2008
Damascus, (SANA) – President Bashar al-Assad discussed on Saturday with former US President Jimmy Carter the Middle East peace process, the Turkey-mediated talks between Syria and Israel, and the issue of the occupied Syrian Golan.
President al-Assad hailed the efforts of President Carter for revitalizing the peace process in the region, as Carter hoped that the new US administration will become involved in the peace process, affirming that any development in this process will contribute greatly to regional and international stability.
Talks also dealt with the situation in Palestine, particularly the situation in Gaza Strip and the tragedy facing the Palestinian people there because of the unjust Israeli siege.
They also discussed Syrian-American relations and prospects for improving these relations with the coming of a new administration when President Obama takes office on January 20th.
The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, Presidential Political and Media Advisor Dr. Buthaina Shaaban, Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Fayssal Mikdad, President Carter’s Advisor for Middle East Affairs Robert Pastor, and Director of the Conflict Resolution Program at the Carter Center Hrair Balian.
Carter also met with Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem in the presence of Deputy Foreign Minister Mikdad and the Director of the Special Bureau at the Foreign Ministry.
President al-Assad and Carter had met earlier in April, affirming during their talks the importance of achieving just and comprehensive peace in the region and their support to the concept of dialogue for finding political solutions to political issues in the region, in addition to stressing the need for rallying efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and lifting the siege imposed on Gaza.
Former US President Carter, who was in office from 1977 to 1981, visited Damascus several times between 1983 and 2008.
During his presidency, Carter adopted an open foreign policy. He also issued several books, including a book in 2006 that compared the Israeli government with the former apartheid regime of South Africa.
Later, in a press conference following his meeting with President al-Assad, Carter said: ” Peace will not be achieved in the region without the full Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan and from the rest of the occupied Arab territories.”
Carter stressed that the Syrian-US relation will improve with the coming of the new US administration.
” Everything will be better when the US President-elect Barack Obama takes office,” Carter added, expressing confidence that the US dealing with the issues of the region and the world will go on an equitable way.
Mr. Carter called for establishing peace in the region on the basis of the international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab peace initiative which stresses on the restoration of the occupied Arab territories, the Right of the Return of the Palestinians and necessity of Israel’s abiding by the UN relevant resolutions.
He also called for reconciliation among all the Palestinian factions, pointing out that Israel has not commit itself to the agreements on the Palestinians who live difficult conditions that deteriorate year after year through confiscation of their lands, setting up hundreds of checkpoints and banning from moving as well as the building of the wall in the West bank.
The former US President hopes that Obama would give priority to the Middle East peace process on his agenda and start involvement in the peace process since the beginning of his term of office.
Mr. Carter pointed out that he discussed with President al-Assad the Syrian-American relations, expressing hope that the US ambassador would return to Damascus as soon as possible, saying that the future of the relations between the two countries would be better after January 21.
As for the Turkish-mediated talks between Syria and Israel, Mr. Carter said the US has to participate in the future in the peace talks between Syria and Israel.
Answering a question on calling the UN Security Council to convene next week to reach a document on the peace process in the region, Mr. Carter said he had no information about this issue. “What I would like to see is that the UN calls on the Quartet to demand Israel abide by the former international resolutions, withdraw from the occupied Arab territories to establish peace in the region and implement the Right of Return,” he added.
He expressed sorrow that the Quartet did nothing over the past few years.
On the situation in Iraq, Mr. Carter said Obama will abide by his promises, leading to better relations with the countries of the region, enabling the Iraqi people and their government to run their country’s affairs and deal with the other countries.
