I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

The fatal shooting of David Jezile, a former leader of the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta), has led to fears of a renewed taxi war in Cape Town.

Jezile, 52, was shot on Friday about 6am near his home in Harare, Khayelitsha.

Police said he sustained several gunshots wounds to his stomach and back.

“Apparently an unknown gunman fired several shots at the driver of a white Isuzu bakkie with greenish stripes (Jezile). He still managed to drive a distance of about 100-metres before it smashed into a shack. The vehicle had seven bullet holes on the right-side door, two at the rear window and another two just below the rear window.

‘We don’t want to be blind-folded when we are investigating’

“He was immediately conveyed to a nearby hospital where he passed away from his injuries,” said police spokesperson Elliot Sinyangana.

Sinyangana said the motive for the murder was unknown, but all possibilities were being investigated. The provincial organised crime unit has been tasked with the case.

Sinyangana said the reason the case was assigned to the organised crime unit was to “consider all possibilities”.

“We don’t want to be blind-folded when we are investigating. It could be anything,” said Sinyangana.

Codeta vice-chairperson Fikile Mriba said the association was shocked at the news of Jezile’s killing.

“We can’t really follow any views or think anything at the moment. We are just shocked. We are busy waiting for more information before we can think or believe anything,” said Mriba.

He added that there were fears of a simmering war among some operators.

“But what some of us are thinking is that a small war is happening, but it is happening very quietly,” said Mriba.

Jezile’s killing follows that of Michael Kupiso, a fellow taxi boss gunned down in front of his house soon after testifying to the Ntsebeza Commission into taxi violence.

Jezile also testified during the commission.

Jezile was killed a day after the Western Cape launched its taxi recapitalisation programme in Belhar.

There are also fears that those opposed to the programme would cause instability in the taxi industry.

The Western Cape Taxi Council has condemned the killing and has called for the swift arrest of those responsible for the attack.

“This came to us as a shock. We had the (recapitalisation) launch on Thursday and this happened on Friday. But we don’t want people to start suspecting each other,” said Mongezi Memani, the taxi council’s public relations officer.

“We don’t entertain that kind of thing; it’s violence and we don’t support it.

“We must let the law take its course first and have these people arrested.

“If not, a lot of people are going to die.”
