I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Police have arrested two men and fatally wounded another believed to be linked to a cash-in-transit heist that occurred in Philippi East.

Police believe the suspects to be part of a gang of five men involved in the heist on Monday when a cashvan was robbed while outside a local grocery store in Stock Road.

Police spokesperson Nondumiso Paul said two police officers were patrolling the area on Tuesday and keeping an eye out for the getaway vehicle, a white Ford Bantam.

At about 9am the officers spotted the vehicle but the suspects, who had also noticed the police, abandoned the bakkie and fled on foot.

“The (police) members pursued the two men on foot and managed to catch up with one of them,” said Paul.

A 27-year-old Khayelitsha man was arrested and held on charges of armed robbery. The other suspect is still at large.

Paul explained that police also received leads on the whereabouts of a further three men believed to be accomplices in the heist.

This led police to the Philippi magistrate’s court where they saw a white VW Golf with three occupants inside.

“When the trio noticed the police they jumped out of the vehicle. Several shots were fired at SAPS members who returned fire,” Paul said.

One of the suspects was fatally wounded. He sustained gunshot wounds to his stomach and arms during the shoot-out. He died at the scene.

One of the remaining two suspects, a 39-year-old Nyanga man, was arrested immediately but the other managed to escape.

Paul said the police vehicle’s rear window was damaged, but no officers sustained any injuries. The two arrested were due to appear in the Philippi magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

Another heist was also reported on Monday on the N7, but police are still searching for the six men suspects. The six fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

In an unrelated incident, two Nyanga residents were robbed of R500 and R200 respectively.

The thieves pounced as the women entered their homestead and robbed them of the cash, handbags and cellphones, Nyanga police’s spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi said.
