An Eastern Cape policeman was shot dead while driving home in Mthatha on Wednesday morning, police said.
Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the 29-year-old policeman was on his way home when four men attempted to hijack him in Strigg street around 3am.
“They shot at him and he returned fire. He was shot in his chest,” said Fatyela.
His body was found 500 metres from his car, which his assailants left behind.
A 21-year-old man was arrested in connection with the murder and would appear in the Mthatha magistrate’s court on Wednesday.
His three alleged accomplices were still at large. – Sapa
