Johannesburg – Wits pharmacy lecturers and students gathered outside the Gauteng health offices in Johannesburg on Thursday to highlight concerns over the future of their profession.
They contended the viability of pharmacies in South Africa were being threatened by new health regulations.
The amended Medicines and Related Substances Control Act provides for all non-pharmacists to apply for licences from the health department to dispense medicines to the public.
It also caps the dispensing fees pharmacists may charge.
Professor Paul Danckwerts, head of the pharmacology department at Wits medical school, said almost 75% of the pharmacies would have to close because of the new pricing model.
“We also want to make sure that doctors stop dispensing. They (the government) are scared of the doctors.”
The protesters handed over a memorandum to a senior official in the department who undertook to deliver the document to Gauteng health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa.
The students sang and danced, with some passing motorists hooting in apparent support of their cause.
Some of the placards waved about read: “Manto stop dabbling with drugs.”
Others said: “We are trained to improve the quality of your lives.”
