Harare – Zimbabwe police rounded up more than 60 people in a raid at the opposition’s headquarters on Monday, including victims of political violence who had taken shelter there, a party spokesperson said.
“At around 1pm, riot police raided Harvest House (MDC headquarters),” Nelson Chamisa said in a statement.
“Over 60 people, mainly women and children, victims of political violence, were rounded up.”
The raid occurred a day after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew from Friday’s presidential run-off election, saying violence had made a fair vote impossible.
More than 10 police officers, some in riot gear, conducted the raid at the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) offices in the capital Harare.
Chamisa said earlier the party was unclear on the reason for the raid and did not know how many people had been removed from the headquarters.
“It’s an act of desperation and frustration after we made the decision not to participate in their electoral charade,” Chamisa said.
The opposition says more than 80 of its supporters have been killed and thousands injured in pre-poll violence. Some of the victims were believed to have sought safety in the MDC headquarters. – Sapa-AFP
