Local is not lekker, say 2010 promoters

WARNING: This is Version 1 of my old archive, so Photos will NOT work and many links will NOT work. But you can find articles by searching on the Titles. There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Not much is being done to get South Africans behind the 2010 World Cup, let alone supporting the national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, two provincial standing committees have heard.

Instead, they were told, much effort was being made to impress overseas countries.

The issue of the locals’ lack of passion or support for the World Cup, and the sports authorities’ plans to address this, came into sharp focus at two provincial standing committee meetings on consecutive days last week.

South Africans, especially Capetonians, have been accused of being indifferent to the prospect of this country hosting the soccer extravaganza.

Critics say there is not the kind of enthusiasm that was expressed by the French before last year’s Rugby World Cup or by the Chinese about this year’s Olympic Games.

On Thursday, ANC MPL Matilda Vantura told an education, cultural affairs and sport standing committee how she was worried about the indifference shown towards the event by the general public, including her own family.

“I’m not a soccer fundi. But I tell you people stay up all night when overseas teams are playing. If it’s local teams, even Bafana Bafana, no one is bothered to watch,” Vantura said to agreeing nods.

“I want the Department of Sport to tell us whether we are at that point (of patriotism) where people stay up like they do for Arsenal and Chelsea,” said Vantura.

On Friday, another ANC MPL Chris Stali asked the Department of the Premier to explain the sports department’s role in the 2010 event.

After being told that it was a matter of co-ordination ANC MPL Patrick McKenzie added that the department was not “connecting”.

“Much more should come from them. You walk down the street, either in town or the townships, there’s no excitement about 2010,” said McKenzie.

“People are still objecting as to where the main stadium is being built.”

McKenzie said: “We have not impressed the people of Cape Town we are trying to impress England and the world but not Capetonians.”

The sports department’s director of legacy for 2010, Michael Wesley, told the Thursday meeting how football ambassadors would be making appearances at “major and minor” events to promote football. He said the department was rolling out a programme to get people back to stadiums.

“But it’s a massive problem to inspire patriotism in a broken society. There is depression, about the team, the coach etc. We first need to promote the ideal of an African team, Bafana in particular.”
