[I thought Cynic’s comments merited an article of its own. Very well said. As for Mbeki’s “Quiet Diplomacy” – that is nothing more than “Quiet Solidarity” with Mugabe. It is such a CON JOB! But I don’t agree the MDC is screwed. The MDC is standing up and fighting back more and more, and while they still are no military force, they are starting to pack a real political punch. It appears to me, and this is my guess, that the WESTERN WORLD, is starting to support the MDC for real. Just today, the leader of Norway met Tsvangirai here in Johannesburg. How many times have I not commented on this happening in Southern Africa on this website?
The notion of China and North Korea defending their colony Zimbabwe from a popular black uprising as Jan suggests is not entirely fantastic. In rapid succession in the last two days we have read of Chinese military personnel in Mutare and now a Chinese ship full of weapons docking in Durban.
Why are Chinese military personnel in Mutare? – Simple, because the Mocambiquan deep water ports (Beira)are a few kilometers away from Mutare so while a small shipment of arms docks in Durban, I reckon it’s a decoy for ships docking in Mocambique carrying thousands of troops and vehicles. Stand by for the arrival in short order of Chinese aircraft in Zim.
This is the reason why Mugabe has not released the election results and it is a clear indication that Mugabe has lost and to my mind also sheds light on why he has remained in power for so long as a puppet of the Chinese.
Any risk that Tsvangirai posed of gaining power in Zim and rekindling relations with the west are now totally out of the question – the MDC is fucked.
As for Mbeki’s quite diplomacy? This has been on the agenda all these years and Mbeki has known about it every minute of the way, which puts him firmly in collusion with Mugabe and the Chinese takeover of Zimbabwe, soon to be followed by South Africa and other SADC countries.
