Two schoolgirls accused of the murder of a domestic worker were yesterday released into the custody of their parents after spending two nights in jail.
The third suspect, the 24-year-old sibling of one of the girls, was denied bail by the Pretoria magistrate’s court.
It is alleged the adult woman, her 16-year-old sister and a 17-year-old friend stabbed to death Johanna Majozi whom they accused of stealing the 24-year-old woman’s job.
None of the suspects can be identified in order to protect the minors.
All three live in Tembisa.
They were arrested on April 15, the same day Majozi was killed in Wespark.
Appearing in court on Thursday, the suspects looked scared.
In their affidavits, the three said they have no previous convictions or pending cases.
All three promised to attend the trial if released on bail. They indicated they would plead not guilty to a charge of murder.
The eldest said she has two children, aged three years and five months, adding that the baby has been sick for the past month.
“I have also been unemployed,” the accused said.
Her younger sister is in Grade 10.
In her statement, she claimed: “On the day of the incident I was with my friend (the other co-accused), while my sister was in the house where the incident took place. I don’t know what happened inside where the victim was killed,” she claimed
The 17-year-old is in Grade 11.
Investigating officer Inspector George Mpye testified that the eldest accused used to work at the place where Majozi was employed.
Mpye stated that the eldest accused phoned Majozi, saying she was coming to the work place, as she wanted her job back.
“The employer said she could come, but they (the three accused) had other motives. Majozi was stabbed several times with a knife in the chest. We found the murder weapons – four kitchen knives,” he testified.
Mpye said Majozi’s hands and feet were tied, indicating that the murder had been planned.
He said a witness saw how the victim tried to escape, with two of the accused grabbing and pulling her away from the gate into the house.
Several items stolen from the house were recovered in the 17-year-old’s home.
Referring to the two minors, the investigating officer said they claimed the eldest had forced them to participate.
Magistrate CC Khoza found that jail or a place of safety would not be suitable for the two minors and released them into the custody of their parents so they could continue with school.
The eldest was denied bail.
The case was postponed for further investigation.
