Angry members of the Ekangala community threw stones at the houses of local councillors in protest over a lack of electricity, Gauteng police said on Friday.
Constable Sally Skosana said electricity in Ekangala had been off on Thursday, which angered community members.
At 10pm on Thursday, the community members threw stones at local councillors’ houses damaging them.
The members then broke into the local council offices and stole computers and other equipment.
Members of the Pretoria crime combating unit, Ekangala police and Bronkhorstspruit police managed to disperse the crowd.
Police arrested 22 people, aged 17 to 43, on Friday morning in connection with the theft of the equipment from the council offices as well as malicious damage to property.
Police expected to make further arrests soon, said Skosana.
All those arrested would be appearing before the Ekangala magistrate’s court on Monday.
Police were still recovering stolen goods from the houses of those arrested.
Police appealed to community members not to damage property or to take municipal property without permission.
Electricity to Ekangala has been disrupted for two weeks.
The protest follows an earlier protest on Wednesday where angry residents threw stones at a traffic officer’s car after an Eskom officer was late for a meeting with residents.
Police managed to calm residents during that protest and the electricity was switched on, said Skosana. – Sapa
