I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Harare – Zimbabwe’s main opposition party filed an urgent high court application on Friday to force the electoral commission to release results from last weekend’s presidential election, its lawyer said.

“It’s an urgent application filed in the high court,” the Movement for Democratic Change’s (MDC) lawyer Andrew Makoni told reporters.

“They are saying let’s know the results, from an official source.”

‘Let’s know the results’

There has been no word on the outcome of the presidential election, nearly six days after the polls closed.

The MDC, which has already won control of parliament in a simultaneous election, has published its own results giving opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai a majority over incumbent Robert Mugabe in the presidential vote.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) said the delay was “due to logistical problems” and said the results were still being verified.

“We find the reasons given by the commission for this delay to be inadequate as all the results were displayed outside polling stations,” a coalition of rights groups said in a statement read by National Constitutional Assembly Chairman Lovemore Madhuku.

“We therefore call upon ZEC to release these results urgently to restore some measure of public confidence in the electoral process.”

The groups said in the case of a run-off the commission should ensure the elections are held within the stipulated 21 days to avoid chaos.

“We have it on reliable knowledge that the government has the undemocratic intention of extending the period of for the holding of a run-off from 21 days to 90 days on the pretext that ZEC is ill-prepared to hold it within the stipulated period,” the statement said.

“We hold that this is unacceptable given the anxiety that is gripping the country. Such a move has vestiges of creating a serious constitutional and political crisis.”

Zimbabweans went to the polls on Saturday to elect a president, lawmakers and councillors in a contest in which President Robert Mugabe faced the stiffest challenge to his nearly three-decade rule.

Announcement of the results has been delayed, fuelling speculation that Mugabe may have lost the elections.

State media said a run-off was now the most likely outcome after no clear winner emerged from Saturday’s election, and a government spokesman said 84-year-old Mugabe’s party was ready for a new battle in the second round.

Tsvangirai’s opposition MDC maintains its leader has surpassed the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a run-off, but says it will, under protest, fight a deciding contest if necessary. – Sapa-AFP
