Four men have been arrested in Soweto in connection with the theft of R2,8-million after a police dog sniffed out the stolen money, Johannesburg police said on Sunday.

“The Soweto dog unit this morning (Sunday) recovered R2,8-million that was stolen by an employee of FBV [Cash Management Services] at the Baragwanath Mall” said Superintendent Eugene Opperman.

“The driver was offloading money and somehow handed over about R2,8-million rand to accomplices” he said.

The driver and a second man were arrested on Saturday.

Police investigations continued on Sunday near Soweto after the initial arrest of the FBV employee,

Detectives and the South African Police (SAP) organised crime unit along with the Soweto police dog unit brought in Sparky, a sheepdog – and the only police dog in South Africa trained to sniff out money.

“At one of the houses where the arrests were made Sparky sniffed out where the money was hidden in one of the rooms” said Opperman.

The four men were arrested and will appear in the Protea magistrate’s court in Soweto on Tuesday. – Sapa
