Shortly before his funeral, macabre mortuary photos of Dube’s naked torso were circulated in black townships. Dube was worshipped as a prophet amongst the Rastafarian religious communities worldwide — and the gruesome pictures enraged and offended them greatly. He was shot assassination-style while he was dropping off his teenaged son and daughter at a family friend’s house in Rosettenville, south of Johannesburg.
Sifiso Mlanga, Julius Gxowa, Thabo Mafoping and Mbofi Mabi, aged between 31 and 35, have since appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. They were charged with Dube’s murder, as well as attempted hijacking and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. There were no robbery charges.
These suspects were remanded in custody. Now, Ludwe Gxowa, a fifth murder suspect who was still being sought, has been arrested int he company of six copper-thieves.
Gxowa, a career-criminal, and his co-accused had been out on bail when he participated in Dube’s murder.

The arrested men were accused of stealing copper cable valued at R150,000 from an Eskom power station near Grootvlei, Balfour, in September last year.
“The men were seen in a 10 ton truck leaving the power station. “The truck was loaded with copper cables from the power station,” said Captain Leonard Hlathi.
Police arrested the men close to the plant after receiving a tip-off about the truck.
