Ramsgate, South Africa – A 21-year-old Umtata waiter has been arrested for the ‘brutal’ murder of a 69-year-old French gourmet-chef in the holiday resort of Ramsgate, KZN on Sunday.
The murder victim, Mrs Yvonne Cosson was described by friends as ‘frail, petite and suffering from Parkinson’s Disease’.
Police spokeswoman Zandra Hechter said the arrested man was an ex-waiter at the chef’s “La Petite Normandie” gourmet-restaurant, apparently fired only a week earlier.
Mrs Yvonne Cosson (69) ‘s partially-burnt, naked body was found next to a wall of her house, covered with plastic bags and soil.Cosson was last seen alive at 8am on Sunday.
Hechter said it appeared the man, who had worked as a waiter at Cosson’s award-winning restaurant attached to her home, ‘had been fired the week before in a dispute over wages’.
Mrs Cosson was dragged from her bed down to a lounge where a struggle then ensued. “You can see she put up a heavy fight,” she said, adding that Cosson was then dragged out of the house and set alight.Soil was thrown over the body in a bid to hide it.
The 21-year-old man was expected to appear in the Ramsgate High Court on Friday. Nothing except her car had been stolen, police said, but were still carrying out further investigations.
Hechter said Cosson’s car had still not yet been recovered by police, but that they hoped to recover the vehicle before the trial date.
Cosson, who emigrated from the Normandy area of France more than 20 years ago, owned and operated La Petite Normandie.
She was described by friends as a petite, frail woman who suffered from Parkinson’s Disease.
The Witness newspaper reported on Wednesday that she was also still in mourning for her son, who had recently died.
“Judging from the way blood was splashed everywhere in the lounge and on the TV and chairs, her murder was brutal,” the Witness reported. — Sapa
