I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

[I am curious about certain strange murders that happen in Police custody. Jan]
The Independent Complaints Directorate, the police watchdog, has noted an 11 percent increase in the number of deaths in police custody or as a result of police action over the past year.
In its 2006/7 annual report tabled in Parliament, the ICD states that 698 people died during that period, with the provinces of Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu-Natal accounting for most of the deaths.
This is 77 more deaths than the previous financial year, when 621 people died.
In Gauteng 169 people died and the KZN figure is 153.
“The overall increase in deaths can be observed across all provinces with the exception of the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape, all of which experienced declines of 35 percent, 22 percent and 38 percent respectively,” the report says.
Shootings contributed 54 percent of the number of people killed. The shooting incidents occurred while police officers were conducting their operations.
In terms of the figures, 97 suspects were shot by the police while committing a crime, 31 were fatally shot while escaping from custody and 141 were shot and killed during the course of arrest.
The ICD stated it was concerned about the fact that four innocent civilians, who happened to be bystanders, died when caught in crossfire between criminals and the police.
The police watchdog also recorded that 31 suspects died in detention after sustaining injuries, 46 lost their lives before they were taken into custody, 108 died of natural causes and 94 committed suicide.
Also of concern to the ICD was the fact that 44 innocent people died as a result of being knocked down by police vehicles and 23 were killed due to police negligence.
The report also showed that 56 people died as a result of domestic violence-related incidents and off-duty shootings. This is a 84 percent increase from the 2005/6 period when only nine people lost their lives.
The ICD recorded that there was an 8 percent increase in the number of criminal offences they were investigating involving members of the police.
They investigated 1 787 cases involving police officers during the 2006/7 financial year. This figure is up from 1 643 in 2005/6.
Responding to the ICD’s report, the DA spokesperson on safety and security, Dianne Kohler Barnard, said the increase in the number of deaths was indicative of overall mismanagement of the SAPS.
“The above figures indicate, among many things, that supervision, management, oversight and control functions within the SAPS need to be radically improved. With the high level of public pressure regarding crime, exacerbated by the violence and threats of violence the police face on a daily basis, functional police need more supervision, support, guidance and monitoring, not less,” said Kohler Barnard.
She said that given the nature of the statistics she hoped senior members of the police would take note and act.
Police spokesman Selby Bokaba said he had not seen the ICD report and was not in an immediate position to comment.
