The Zimbabwean government has dropped nine farms owned by the South African
Oppenheimer mining dynasty from a list of white-owned farms to be seized for
land redistribution. According to reports, 180 farms, among them six owned by
foreign nationals and nine belonging to the Oppenheimer family, have been
spared from acquisition. The delisting comes in the wake of representations
diplomatic missions lodged with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to have them
spared.
The Foreign Ministry says the Oppenheimer farms have been dropped because
they fall in the agro-industry and ranching category.
Last month, Nicky Oppenheimer, non-executive deputy chairman of mining giant
Anglo American Plc, was under pressure to give up farms for a land reform
programme. This came after senior government officials descended on his vast
Debshan farm.
The government says the fabulously wealthy Oppenheimers owns a total of 960
000 hectares of land, the size of Belgium, in Zimbabwe. President Robert
Mugabe has targeted more than 3 000 white-owned farms as part of a drive to
redistribute land he says was stolen by British settlers more than a century
ago.
He said after meeting Daniel arap Moi, the Kenyan President, in Nairobi
earlier this month that he welcomed a Nigerian proposal to set up a
seven-nation mission to mediate an end to a stand off between Zimbabwe and
Britain over the land issue. – Reuters
