The head of the Pollsmoor prison hospital has been suspended for allegedly taking a bribe from an awaiting-trial prisoner in return for a transfer to a private hospital without a guard.

Frans Muller, a senior male nurse and warder who is in charge of the hospital at Pollsmoor’s maximum security section, has been removed from his post on full pay pending an investigation of alleged corruption and bribery, Correctional Services sources say.

The department is probing allegations that Muller received more than R3 000 from the prisoner to transfer him to a private hospital.

It is understood that the prisoner has a stomach ailment and was unguarded in the private hospital.

The prisoner was in Pollsmoor’s hospital for several months while awaiting trial on a fraud charge, according to well-placed sources.

He was taken to a city court regularly, together with other awaiting-trial prisoners, and slept in the prison hospital.

He was transferred to the private hospital about 14 days ago. There he let slip to a doctor that he was an awaiting-trial prisoner at Pollsmoor.

The doctor apparently informed a nurse, who alerted Pollsmoor authorities.

Pollsmoor officials went to the private hospital to investigate.

The prisoner allegedly admitted to warders that he had given Muller more than R3 000 to transfer him to the private hospital.

Western Cape Correctional Services spokesperson Mark Solomons said on Tuesday that the prisoner was back in Pollsmoor hospital.

He also confirmed that Muller had been suspended.

Approached for comment, Muller said Tuesday: “My union shop steward told me not to speak to anybody about the issue.”
