SA: Women claim assault by Police officer

By Bronwyn Gerretsen In a haunting flashback to the case of the “Blue Light Stalker”, two Durban women have accused a Westville police officer of indecently assaulting them last weekend. The Blue Light Stalker was a police reservist who, using a police blue light, preyed on women leaving nightclubs. He would stop the women and “arrest” them for being drunk before molesting them and making them perform sexual acts to avoid arrest. In the latest incident, a 23-year-old women was arrested for drunken driving. She claimed that the police inspector had felt her thighs and implied that he had wanted to explore parts of her body. An hour or two later, a 24-year-old alleged that she, too, had been indecently assaulted by the same officer after her boyfriend had been arrested for drunken driving. In this case, she had been made to sit in the police van with the inspector while her boyfriend was driven to the police station in his own vehicle. The police officer is still at work while a case of sexual harassment is being investigated. The 23-year-old said that she and a friend had just left Westville Mall when they were stopped by two police officers. After undergoing a breathalyser test, which showed that she was over the limit, the woman was arrested. She was made to sit in the front of the police van between two police officers. On the way to having a blood test done, she said, the inspector had “kept putting his hand on my upper thigh and holding it there for a few seconds at time”. This had continued on the way back to the police station after the test. “(The officer) then proceeded to pull into the Shell garage on St John’s Avenue. The other officer got out of the car to get coffee,” she said. The inspector continued touching her legs and making lewd suggestions. While dealing with the paperwork with another policeman at the station, the inspector had returned with the 24-year-old, who claimed that he had indecently assaulted her. Police spokesperson Muzi Mngomezulu said that the case was being investigated. He was unable to say why the women had been made to sit in the front of the van, or why the second woman had been made to sit in the van when she had not been arrested. |
