Jan] South African President Thabo Mbeki on Friday for the first time Friday publicly defended his health minister, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, accused of theft and alcoholism, calling her a “heroine.” “I knew her more than 45 years ago… I went into exile with her in 1962… Manto Tshabalala-Msimang is a principled fighter for a democratic, non-racial and non-sexist South Africa, who has dedicated her entire life to the achievement of democracy,” Mbeki said in his weekly letter to the nation. “In our tradition as the ANC (the ruling party since 1994) we do not normally celebrate our heroes and heroines publicly, such as Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, until they have died,” he said in the letter. “Violating this tradition, I have now written about Manto Tshabalala-Msimang as I have because some, at home and abroad, who did nothing or very little to contribute to the immensely difficult and costly struggle to achieve liberation, have chosen to sit as judges over who she is… with regard to the pursuit of the goal of a better life for all our people.” Newspapers have accused the health minister of incompetence, alcoholism and theft. Under the front-page headline “Manto: A Drunk and a Thief”, a newspaper also said the minister – who underwent a liver transplant earlier this year – has a long-standing drink problem. The Sunday Independent quoted a former Botswana government official as saying a psychiatric doctor had pleaded with him for clemency for Tshabalala-Msimang, whom he was treating for kleptomania. She has also often been been pilloried by the media, with her championing of vegetables to help combat Aids earning her the nickname “Dr Beetroot” and the first calls for her head. Aids campaign groups have also criticised her for her alleged lethargic approach to the fight against the pandemic. In the face of all these allegations, Mbeki has so far only asked the media to provide proof. This week, ANC said that it had learned of the theft “affair” in Botswana where the minister had worked as a health official. |
