SA: Cops in shoot-out with sweet hijackers
Six tons of sweets were recovered after a shoot-out between police and six hijackers in Ladysmith, police said on Friday. Captain Charmaine Struwig said police officers driving back to Ladysmith from the nearby town of Ezakheni spotted “a suspicious vehicle” driving along Pieters Road in the early hours of Thursday morning. The driver of the vehicle did not heed the officers call to halt and instead sped off. The police gave chase and a shoot-out ensued. The police forced the car to a halt and the vehicle’s six occupants ran away. The officers managed to arrest two of the men. Police recovered two hand guns, which had their serial numbers removed. Struwig said the men were alleged to have been involved in the hijacking of a delivery truck on Wednesday evening on the road between Dundee and Ladysmith. Information from the two men led to the recovery of almost six tons of sweets, blankets, towels, aprons, face clothes and clothing, all valued at between R60 000 and R80 000. The two men are expected to appear in the Ladysmith magistrate’s court where they will face charges of possession of an unlicenced firearm and hijacking. Struwig said police were investigating the possibility that the two men were linked to the robbery of businesses in the area. – Sapa |
