[This email is doing the rounds. Jan] Dear Reader, While on holiday in George, a few months ago my daughter (6) was sexually abused. When we got back to Cape Town the next day she told me what had happened and I reported it immediately. The SAPS (Tableview) came and took her statement and left. They then sent the docket to George police station as the molestation took place there. Only 3 weeks after the incident, I was informed by George FSC to go collect a J88 form and go to the district surgeon at Karel Bremmer. When I got to his rooms and handed him the J88 form to “be completed and faxed back” he told me that the investigating officer should have accompanied me as the J88 was evidence. He was also shocked to find out that SAPS had waited so long for his report as they should have taken me to the district surgeon on their first visit to take my statement. (Which was within 72 hours of the abuse so she could have received ARV’s) I have been following up the case with the prosecutor at George court and now he says they need more conclusive evidence… They already have: NOW IF THAT’S NOT CONCLUSIVE THEN WHAT IS??? How much proof is needed where rape and sexual abuse is concerned???? She’s only 6 and cannot testify in court, I will not put her through that anyway. I am her voice and I will be heard!!!! This march is not just because it happened to my child because in a lot of instances where evidence is insufficient, these cases are thrown out! These rapists and abusers are left to roam the streets and possibly do the same to one of your children! This march is for all those that have fallen through the system (and might still in the future, unless we do something about it!) and it is time that someone does something about it.
