President PW Botha talks to me about the Inkomati Accord

[During my chat with President PW Botha, he mentioned the signing of the Inkomati accord with Mozambique.

I must admit I had always been mystified by that during the 1980’s. I had also wondered if it was a wise thing to do, and whether there would be any guarantee that it would be honoured by the South African Govt but NOT by Mozambique and thus the ANC terrorists would still slip through.

PW Botha told me that one day, some years ago, when Nelson Mandela was in Mozambique, Mandela phoned him. Mandela then said, “You did a lot for Mozambique”. Mandela thanked him.

I asked PW Botha why he had signed the Inkomati accord with Mozambique. He said to me he was concerned about fighting a war on two fronts – the west (Angola) and the east (Mozambique). And that was his main motivation in signing that agreement, so that they could focus rather on the west. Jan]
