S.Africa: Reader comment: The Gravy Train & Unproductive Blacks
[A reader sent these comments about our officials who earn R10 million and more: “Perhaps someone should ask exactly what professionalism and expertise Agreed. But lots of these blacks are quite unproductive. In my own work situation I have seen some blacks promoted who then can’t handle their job. In fact, just today I was chatting to a young white guy who is so angry because a black guy, who started working at the same time as him was promoted to a very senior position and is now his boss. Let me explain the situation. There is a certain system we have here, a legal system, which always used to be taken care of by one person. I looked after it for 1 year when I first started at my current job. Prior to me an Afrikaans guy looked after it. Then an Indian guy looked after it for 2 years. It is a high pressure job with lots of daily problems. So they took this system, which for the last few years had always been looked after by one person, and created a team headed by a newly promoted black guy. Under him was a white guy and an Indian guy. So now, there are THREE people doing the job which used to be done by one (pressured) person. Do you know, that basically one person is still looking after the same system (the white guy), and the black boss and the Indian co-worker are doing virtually nothing. The newly promoted black guy disappears from work for an hour or two at a time. We only see him about half the time. Nobody knows what else he does. Our non-white managers don’t seem to be interested either. Its fascinating watching these blacks being promoted “out of their depth” and then seeing who still hangs around and actually does the daily work of fixing things, investigating problems, etc. I console myself though. The whites do the work, and even the non-White managers know who is pulling their weight and who isn’t BUT… there are racial quotas to fill!!! Jan] |
