[A co-worker of mine who lives in Pretoria told me that yesterday, 20th December, his wife was in Menlin Shopping centre when criminals attacked a jewelry store and started shooting wildly. His wife tried to phoned hime on his cell phone to tell him what was going on. Then he phoned 10111 (which is our equivalent of 911). He decided to time it, and was shocked to find that it took 4 minutes before someone answered! In the shopping centre, the various shops were hiding customers in the back of the shops. The criminals attacked an Arthur Kaplan jewelry store. They actually opened fire, with the intention it seems, of breaking the glass. Then they reached in and grabbed watches and fled. The only injury resulted when a security guard was hit by flying glass. My co-worker’s wife said that afterwards, people flip flops were lying all over the shopping mall as testimony to the sheer terror with which the shopping mall customers ran in order to hide. Jan] |
