[There has been talk for some months now among the communists as to whether they should openly contest elections against the ANC. In my book, Government by Deception, I mentioned a discussion between the former leader of the S.African Communist party and a professor I know. The SACP leader had told him that it was possible that one day the SACP could pull the rug out from under the ANC’s feet and get the Blacks to vote for them en masse – if they deemed it was in their interests.

I am not sure if they truly believe that yet – nevertheless, they are definitely discussing it openly in recent months for the first time ever.

I should also mention, that there is a secret agreement between the ANC And the SA Communist Party (which they will deny) – but it was documented by the former Govt many years ago. The agreement is for a 2-stage revolution. In the first stage, the ANC leads the struggle. Then, once the ANC is in political control of the country, the SACP steps forward to “lead the Revolution” on towards outright Socialism/Communism. It has been apparent since last year’s election that the ANC/SACP alliance want to now move into the 2nd Phase of the Revolution which will take us towards true Socialism/Communism.

These discussions must therefore be seen within that context – as the Communists and the Left debate among themselves as to which strategy will bring us towards Socialism the fastest. Jan]

THE Young Communist League wants its parent organisation, the South African Communist Party (SACP), to contest local government elections independently of its ally, the African National Congress (ANC), in parts of the country, says a league discussion document.

The document, released ahead of the league’s national policy and strategy conference in Limpopo next month, says the proposal will be debated with the hope of it being adopted, so that it could then be sold to the SACP national leaders for implementation before the poll.

“Our discussion document includes a variety of proposals, which includes the SACP engaging the ANC in order for it to contest certain municipalities,” said national secretary Buti Manamela.

If the SACP accepts the proposal, the move could represent a significant step towards steering the organisation out of the 60-year-old alliance with the ruling ANC.

The conference is also expected to discuss unemployment.

The issue seems likely to dominate the conference’s agenda, as initiatives set up by government to address unemployment have not succeeded.

Manamela said the conference also aimed at coming up with positions on the youth’s approach to poverty alleviation and the crisis of lack of resources for education.

At least 600 delegates from the league’s branches across the country are expected to attend the four-day conference from today.

SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande and Limpopo premier Sello Moloto are scheduled to address the conference.
