Jan] London – Everything points to the fact that it was indeed South African men who abducted and raped three women in a British county, the British police said on Thursday. A resident of Northampton, where the three men abused the women, has offered a reward, together with the police, for anybody who can help pinpoint the whereabouts of the men. Naomi Cooper of the police said closed-circuit television films had already been studied and hundreds of clues had been received from members of the public. It was possible the first of three suspects could be taken into custody early next week. Cooper told Die Burger that Northampton had a large contingent of South Africans as residents. Because of this they were reasonably sure the raped women would have been able to recognise what “a heavy South African accent” was. Concur The statements of the women also concur with preliminary investigations undertaken by the police. Scotland Yard asked Britons to be on the lookout for suspect black men about 1.8m tall and below the age of 35 who tended to cruise aimlessly in cities. They used a BMW and Fiat Punto as getaway cars. No identikit of the suspects is available as yet. According to chief inspector John Jones of the Northampton police unit, the men grabbed the women in the early hours of August 1 in the city centre of Northampton. They were apparently bent on taking five victims, but two women managed to escape. Although a countrywide police search had been launched, the possibility was not excluded that the men could have left Britain already. A team of about 30 police is working on the case. Several South Africans living in Britain said the feeling that the rapists could be compatriots, was a “terrifying thought”.
