[The disgusting lawlessness of this country continues unabated. Jan] Newcastle – A man was shot dead during an attempted hijacking in Empangeni on Thursday morning, KwaZulu-Natal police said. Johannes Venter, 65, was shot in the right side of the chest by one of three men who attempted to hijack his car at about 10:00, said Captain Tienkie van Vuuren. Venter, a former deputy headmaster at Empangeni High School, and his wife, Lizzie, were confronted by the trio as they were about to leave a nursery in Empangeni. “Three unknown suspects alighted from a red VW Golf and approached their vehicle in an attempt to hijack it. For some unknown reason the one suspect fired a shot at Mr Venter.,” said Van Vuuren. Lost control The wounded man sped off in the direction of the nearby hospital and lost control. The car left the road about 200 metres from the hospital and came to a halt in a field. Paramedics declared Venter dead at the scene. His wife was treated for shock. The three men fled and are still at large. The couple have a son and a daughter. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the police on 10111 or Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
