I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

A security guard was killed in a shootout with armed robbers at the Citygate Mall at the corner of Field and Victoria streets in Durban on Monday.

Director Johan Booysen, head of the Organised Crime Unit in KwaZulu-Natal, said initial reports indicated that the men had attempted to rob the guard as he collected money from a supermarket.

Staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said four men had entered the store and one had approached the guard and told him not to move.

‘I am truly amazed that I’m still alive’

The men opened fire on the guard when he turned to face them. He fell to the ground, from where he returned fire and wounded two of his attackers before they shot and killed him. The men fled without taking any money.

“I was talking to the Fidelity guard at the time when four men came in. One of them told a customer to move out of his way. He shot first and the others all joined in and proceeded to shoot the Fidelity guard. Before I knew it there was a shootout. I just stood there and closed my ears while bullets were flying all around me. I am truly amazed that I’m still alive,” said a traumatised staff member.

ER24 paramedic Mark Perks declared the guard dead at the scene.

The investigating officer, Inspector Bruce MacInnes, said the robbers had fled towards the Durban taxi and bus terminus in Victoria Street where they had boarded a getaway car. “No one else was injured and all involved have the guard’s bravery to thank for that,” he said. The guard was not identified on Monday.

Two men were arrested two hours later by the Organised Crime Unit’s field officers at a clinic in Inanda, where they were receiving treatment for bullet wounds. The men are expected to be linked to the guard’s murder.
