S.Africa: Brazen thieves targeting Durban businesses

WARNING: This is Version 1 of my old archive, so Photos will NOT work and many links will NOT work. But you can find articles by searching on the Titles. There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

S.Africa: Brazen thieves targeting Durban businesses

[Not even metal grills and shutters are keeping these thieves out! Jan]

Security grills and metal shutters are no match for a group of brazen burglars who are smashing into businesses in Durban.

Frustrated shop owners believe an organised gang is behind the spate of late night break-ins.

Eight shops have been hit in the last four weeks, says Nicky Gounden of the local community policing forum.

‘When I went outside, I saw a huge hole in the shop’s gate’
Metal grills, metal shutters and alarms seem to be ineffective in protecting shops in Broad, Grey and Prince Edward Streets.

And business owners are scared of being named or identified for fear the burglars will come after them.

Chairperson of the Nicol Square Community Policing Forum Nicky Gounden said: “There definitely has been an increase in break-ins in the area. I think that there is a syndicate operating in the area.”

The latest target, Mehta’s Tent Shop, a fabric shop in Prince Edward Street, was hit by the burglars early on Thursday morning.

Mehta’s owner, who does not want to be named, said the thieves used a bolt cutter to cut through his metal gate and then shattered the glass door. For some reason, the alarm only went off when the police came to investigate.

“There was glass all over the place. It looked like they also tied a rope to pull the gate out,” he said.

A resident of a flat opposite the shop heard what she thought was gunshots. “At first I thought it was gunshots. When I went outside, I saw a huge hole in the shop’s gate.”

Another resident described how she saw “well dressed” men standing in a line and passing along the rolls of fabrics.

The robbers made off with expensive fabric – the value of which has still to be determined – and R150 from the till.

The thieves are taking advantage of the shorter daylight hours.

“We are so fed up with the crime in the area. Something has to be done soon about the increase in shop break-ins,” the owner said.

Another shop owner, who is also fearful of being identified, said it was small businesses such as fabric shops and take-aways that seemed to be targeted.

One shop owner said that at night most proprietors leave their tills open with very little cash in them.

He said it was the stock that was being targeted.

Mehta’s owner said the police response was impressive, but the burglars were making their getaway within three minutes of the police were alerted.

Police are patrolling the area, but according to Gounden the thieves are “brazen and fearless”.
