Bloemfontein – Top ANC officials allegedly paid an assassin to kill Noby Ngombane, City Press revealed on Sunday.

A senior African National Congress leader in the Free State and a senior official of the party’s provincial office in Bloemfontein allegedly conspired and paid an assassin from Bethlehem to kill Ngombane.

A special task team investigating Ngombane’s assassination questioned the senior official on Tuesday morning.

The paper said seven investigating officers questioned him for more than an hour.

The police allegedly told the senior official they knew he and the ANC leader had hired the assassin, and that they had paid for it from party coffers.

Ngombane, who headed the provincial government’s policy co-ordination and acted as spokesperson for Free State premier Beatrice Marshoff, was shot in the driveway of his house in Hillsboro on March 22.

He later died in the Bloemfontein Medi-Clinic.

Rumours of a political assassination surfaced shortly after his death.

Ngombane was killed one day before Marshoff was set to announce changes to her cabinet.

Police Superintendent Annelie Wrensch said people were questioned, statements taken and clues followed up during all investigations.

She said the murder was still being investigated, but police could not reveal the names of people who had made statements.
