S.Africa: Hijackers are targetting TOURISTS!!

By Sharlene Packree Foreigners visiting South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province are being targeted by a gang of hijackers in a silver Volvo. In the past few weeks, police have investigated five cases of foreigners being robbed of their vehicles, cellphones and cash by the Volvo’s occupants. According to Captain Priscilla Naidu, spokesperson for Pinetown SAPS, the syndicate is believed to be targeting vehicles with foreign registration plates. ‘They then ordered the driver and his female passenger to get out of their vehicle’ Last week a Botswana resident’s vehicle was hijacked by the occupants of a silver Volvo. “The man had been driving on the N3, near Pinetown, when the Volvo drew up alongside him with blue flashing lights,” said Naidu. Naidu said that one of the passengers of the Volvo told the driver to pull over on to the roadside, which he did. “When he stopped, two men alighted from the Volvo and approached him with firearms. They then ordered the driver and his female passenger to get out of their vehicle.” The victims were told to get into the back of the vehicle and lie down with their eyes closed. They were driven around by one of the suspects before being dropped off near Sherwood. “The couple were also robbed of their personal belongings, cellphones and cash,” said Naidu. Police are investigating another case of hijacking involving two Mozambican nationals, who were en route from Durban to Mozambique when they were hijacked by the occupants of a Volvo of the same description. Police have urged the public to be vigilant when approached by unmarked vehicles displaying police sirens and blue lights. “SAPS Pinetown is investigating five cases of hijacking with a similar modus operandi,” said Naidu. “Should people suspect that the occupants of the vehicles are not policemen, they should not stop, but rather drive to the nearest police station. “If they are in possession of a cellphone, they should contact 10111.” This article was originally published on page 7 of Daily News on April 21, 2005 Source: Independent Online (IOL) |
