[So who really is to blame? The crowd or the Police? I think the ANC should take the blame for all of it. They are the ones who made bold promises they could not keep to the Blacks. They are the ones who taught the Blacks to throw stones and to set everything on fire at the slightest hint of unhappiness. Jan] Johannesburg – Three policemen implicated in the death of a protesting teenager in Harrismith last year will face a murder charge, the Independent Complaints Directorate said on Thursday. Teboho Mkhonza, 17, was part of a group of people from Intabazwe township holding a march around the nearby N3 national road to complain about poor service delivery in the area. As the protests became heated and stones were thrown, police opened fire and Mkhonza was among those injured. According to news reports at the time he appeared to only have lacerations and was taken to hospital for treatment. He died later from internal injuries. “The ICD took charge of the case docket immediately and after finalisation of our investigation, we forwarded the case docket to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with recommendations that police officers be prosecuted for murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm,” the ICD said. The DPP decided to prosecute the three police officers on murder and 16 counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The latter charges related to people injured, allegedly by police, during the march. The men had not yet been arrested and were still on duty. The director of the ICD, Karen McKenzie, said: “This should not happen again and the SAPS should take urgent steps to ensure that police officers who are tasked with crowd management do not have access to birdshot and buckshot. “Has the time not come for the SAPS to destroy all stores of birdshot and buckshot, because it is not a less lethal form of force?” she asked.
