[This might sound like a lot… but this is actually extremely understated. According to South African estimates, about 250,000 people are dying each year here alone. It is commonly accepted in South Africa that we have 8-9 million HIV(43)+ people. Now South Africa, with 44 million people makes up a tiny portion of Africa’s entire population – which is probably 600-800 million. So it could be that right now… there are 100 million people already HIV(43)+. So the reality could be many times worse than this report makes out. The UN says there is a need for $200 billion in aid order to save 16 million people from dying of the disease, and another 43 million in order to keep citizens from contracting HIV. According to the report, 6,500 Africans died of AIDS last year. More than three million people were infected. |
