I found it quite funny… a black man accusing a brown man of racism… Jan] By Angela Quintal Newly elected National Council of Provinces (NCOP) deputy chairperson Peggy Hollander believes her appointment to the second highest job in parliament’s second chamber is proof that the African National Congress is serious about ending racism. “The ANC is really serious about ending racism and I think our people should take notice and sit up,” she said on Monday soon after she was unanimously elected. She fills the post vacated by Mninwa Mahlangu, who on Monday was elected to succeed the late Joyce Kgoali as NCOP head. Hollander, who served as Northern Cape MEC for public works in the provincial government of national unity when she was still a member of the NNP, resigned from that party to join the ANC. Hollander was appointed MEC for social welfare in the Northern Cape under then premier Manne Dipico in 1999, but was axed in April 2000 in a provincial cabinet reshuffle. She then served as the provincial legislature’s deputy speaker. Hollander was nominated by Free State Premier Beatrice Marshoff and seconded by Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo Balindlela.
