Pretoria – Outraged flat dwellers in Sunnyside, Pretoria killed a suspected rapist and seriously injured another after hearing the screams of two teenage girls, police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Inspector Percy Morokane said that two 17-year-old girls from Witbank who were visiting Pretoria were befriended by a man, 23, who invited them to his flat in the Maxvie building.

This man and a friend who have both been discovered to be foreign nationals went out to buy drinks for the girls on Tuesday night.

“Moments after they left, two other unknown men, aged 20 and 22, invited the girls to their own flat within the same block,” said Morokane.

He said the men forcefully removed the girls’ clothing without saying a word.

The girls’ screams alerted neighbours, who caught the two men “with their pants down”. The 22-year old was raping one girl while the 20-year-old was attempting to rape the other.

‘Variety of objects’

The residents assaulted the alleged rapists “with a variety of objects”.

Police were called and managed to rescue the two men, who were found to be Angolan.

Paramedics summoned to Sunnyside police station declared the 20-year-old attempted rape suspect dead. The 22-year-old was in a very critical condition in hospital.

“Mob justice has become an important issue over the past few years and people who attempt to mete out street justice will meet the full might of the law,” said Morokane.

Investigations were under way and witnesses were giving statements.

It is not known how many people were involved in the mob justice but when arrested they will be charged with murder and attempted murder.

The two rape victims were undergoing counselling.
