S.Africa: Schoolgirls stabbed to death for refusing romantic advances

In a spate of horrific incidents on school grounds, a schoolgirl was stabbed to death and another was seriously injured in two separate attacks after they allegedly rejected romantic advances from male pupils. In another incident a schoolboy was fatally stabbed by a classmate outside their classroom at Siyathuthuka High School in Inanda after an argument. Police spokesperson Musa Khaba said Thandiwe Dladla, 16, was on her way to Mzingazi High School near Richards Bay on Monday when she was allegedly stopped by her boyfriend. Witnesses said that an argument had ensued between the two as they walked to school. 20-year-old suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed Dladla Police said that the suspect then fled from the scene but he later handed himself over to the Richards Bay police. In the Inanda incident, S’duduzo Mdletshe, 17, and another pupil in his class were passing unsavoury remarks and swearing at each other in their classroom on Monday. When the lesson was over the suspect walked up to Mdletshe and confronted him, he then pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest – the Grade 9 pupil died on the scene. The suspect fled from the school. Police in Inanda said they were still searching for the suspect and hoped that an arrest would follow shortly. Meanwhile, a Zeph Dlomo High School Grade 9 pupil has been hospitalised after she was assaulted and stabbed in the head on Tuesday by a Grade 10 pupil during the lunch break. According to police spokesperson Velaphi Zulu, the teenage girl was stabbed in the head after she refused to speak with him privately. The police said that the suspect was still at large. Earlier this year near Jozini Dam, a school pupil hanged himself after he had hacked a schoolgirl to death when she refused to become his girlfriend. Provincial Minister of Education Ina Cronje said she was shocked to hear about the incidents.
