WARNING: This is Version 1 of my old archive, so Photos will NOT work and many links will NOT work. But you can find articles by searching on the Titles. There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

S.Africa: Gas explosion: 6 dead – 100 missing

Secunda – Six people are dead, over 100 injured and at least nine are missing after a gas explosion at Sasol’s Secunda plant on Wednesday.

“One of the contractors has a missing list of 14 people,” said Johann van Rheede, spokesperson for the petrochemical company.

However, he could not commit to the accuracy of this figure.

“People are in shock. Sometimes they run away from the scene and it takes time to get an accurate picture” said Van Rheede.

Police earlier put the figure at nine.

One of the injured died on arrival at hospital with serious burns.

About 500 people were working at the ethylene plant when the blast happened at 09:40.

Ben Otto, manager of the Highveld MediClinic in Trichardt near Secunda said the hospital was on full alert by the time the first patient arrived, having been alerted by Sasol.

Van Rheede said five patients were in intensive care and that a total of 44 people had been treated and 24 discharged.

Gas cloud ignited

The plant was undergoing planned maintenance and there were several contractors in it when the blast occurred.

“Indications are that the incident was caused when a gas cloud, due to a gas leak, ignited,” Van Rheede said.

The fire was extinguished within minutes and the cloud brought under control after “a quick and effective emergency response,” he said.

The plant is part of Sasol’s polymers chemical production division.

There are normally 6 000 permanent employees and 6 000 contractors on the whole site, spread over four shifts a day.

Sasol Polymers managing director Terry Bates said the ethylene plant produced chemicals, and fuel production would not be affected.

The explosion will be investigated by the labour department, the police and Sasol.

The extent of the damage still has to be assessed.

‘Too few workers’

Trade union Solidarity said it had requested that Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana appoint a commission of inquiry into the blast.

The union’s occupational safety expert, Chris Pienaar, said the blast was the most recent in a series of explosions involving Sasol.

He said two Sasol employees had died in June and July in explosions at various sites.

“Sasol will have to do something urgently to break this cycle (of explosions).

The problem with Sasol is that too few workers are doing too much work,” Pienaar said.

“There is also insufficient supervision on the production line.

Time for maintenance of the refinery has been reduced and Solidarity does not find this acceptable.”

Van Rheede said he could not comment on the union’s statement except to say Solidarity was entitled to its comments “and we do take notice of them”.
